Scholarships

College scholarships are an important for many families when determining a school. Some friends, alumni, and parents understand that a good education should be the forefront of the decision to picking the right college. Below are some college scholarships that our Foundation helps to sponsor.

Harweda Johnson Scholarship

The Harweda Johnson scholarship is for an MSMS student who will be attending a top tiered University. The scholarship application can be found in the councilor’s office. The scholarship is awarded by a committee.

Mary Beth Casto Bennett Scholarship

The Mary Beth Casto Bennett Scholarship is to honor a fellow alumnus. Her classmates wanted to help MSMS students because they believe that is what Mary Beth Casto Bennett would have done. The scholarship is for a graduating MSMS senior who is majoring in either the fields of Psychology or Social Work.

Barry James Youngblood Memorial Scholarship

The Barry James Youngblood Memorial Scholarship has been set up to honor Barry James Youngblood a 2003 graduate. Barry had a great passion for knowledge. He continually pursued his many interests in physics, solar energy, technology, astronomy, math, world events and economics. His enthusiasm was contagious, as he encouraged others to further their education. This scholarship is for an MSMS graduate who is accepted as a full-time student to an accredited Mississippi college or university.


The Michael E. Shaheen, Jr. Scholarship

The recipient of the scholarship will have attended public school prior to MSMS, enter a 4-year college, and need additional funding to attend college. The Michael E. Shaheen Jr. Scholarship is made possible by a donor from the Community Foundation of Northwest Mississippi. The scholarship honors Mr. Michael E. Shaheen, Jr., who grew up in Como, MS; graduated from Yale University and law school at Vanderbilt. He served as mayor of Como and spent 22 years in Washington as head of the federal Department of Justice's Office of Professional Responsibility.
The scholarship is for a graduating MSMS senior who lives in the community of Como, or resides in one of the following counties: Panola, Tallahatchie, Quitman, Coahoma, Tunica, Tate, or Marshall. The recipient of the scholarship will have attended public school prior to MSMS, enter a 4-year college, and need additional funding to attend college.
